Cognitive Assessment or Learning Assessment

We know that neurodivergent children and adults are more likely to have ‘uneven cognitive profiles’, learning difficulties, and/or learning disability, compared to neurotypical children and young people. A cognitive assessment can be useful to help identify the unique learning profiles of individuals, as well as to help diagnose a Learning Disability / Intellectual Disability if this is indicated.

Cognitive Assessment Full Scale IQ – Children

We use The Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scales of Intelligence – Fourth UK Edition (WPPSI-IV) and The Wechsler Intelligence Scales for Children – Fifth UK Edition (WISC-V) which calculates a Full Scale IQ score and assesses intelligence across five domains.

  • Verbal Comprehension
  • Visual-Spatial Reasoning
  • Fluid Reasoning
  • Working Memory
  • Processing Speed

Cognitive Assessment Full Scale IQ – Adults

We use The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale – Fourth UK Edition (WAIS-IV) which calculates a Full Scale IQ score and assesses intelligence across four domains.

  • Verbal Comprehension
  • Perceptual Reasoning
  • Working Memory
  • Processing Speed

The assessment takes 1-1.5 hours and a full report is provided. This includes detailed recommendations for how to best support the individual’s learning profile. Assessments can be used from the age of 2.5 years to adulthood. The assessment takes place face-to-face in our clinic.

Global Learning Skills

This is an assessment of global learning skills. It can be used to identify whether an individual has an ‘uneven cognitive profile’. In other words, they have a ‘spiky’ pattern of strengths and difficulties. Therefore, they benefit from specific supports and strategies to aid their learning or study or workplace/life skills.

For example, someone with difficulties in processing speed may require additional time to complete tasks or examinations. Using this assessment also helps assess whether someone may have an underlying Global Learning Disability or Intellectual Disability. Accordingly, if this is indicated then we will discuss whether you would like us to carry out some further assessment.

In other words, we can assess for and diagnose Intellectual Disability. This diagnosis can be made from the age of 5. Prior to this, ‘Global Developmental Delay’ would be considered.

Global Learning Ability

Please note that this is an assessment of global learning ability. In other words it is not used to assess for a ‘Specific Learning Disorder’ such as dyslexia or
dyscalculia.  However, if you require an assessment for Specific Learning Disorder then we may be able to point you in the right direction.

If you would like an assessment please start the process by completing our form and we will be in touch. Please feel free to connect with us on Facebook too.
