Standard Autism Assessment – £1895

Our expert team have appointments available now.

Standard Autism Assessment Hertfordshire

Are you looking for a standard autism assessment? We provide multidisciplinary assessments for autism, following best practice NICE guidelines. Our team consists of highly skilled clinicians who have had many years of experience working in the NHS, including specialist experience of autism assessment.

We do not provide paediatric assessments, language assessments or occupational assessments.

These are not required as part of most autism assessments and are not required in order to make or rule out an autism diagnosis. Although, for some children, it may become clear during our assessment that they would benefit from additional assessments like these to further understand other parts of their profile. Indeed, if this is the case we will be able to let you know if this forms part of our recommendations.

Autism Assessment Hertfordshire – Initial contact and screening

Our clinic works on a self-referral basis. In other words, this means that families can contact us directly to enquire about autism assessments.

We will ask you for some basic information about your child and the reasons for you requesting an assessment. After your response, we will have an initial discussion with you to make sure that we think we are the right service for you. If you would like to proceed, we would then send some screening questionnaires to you and your child’s school. We know that children can sometimes ‘mask’ their autism in school environments but it is important for us to understand how the child functions in school.

Initial assessment

When the screening questionnaires have all been returned to us, we will arrange an initial appointment with one of our Clinical Psychologists. This appointment is conducted via MS Teams. It will last for 1.5-2 hours and is an interview-based assessment aimed at gathering a detailed developmental history. In addition, an overview of the child’s presentation from birth to the current time will be taken.

We need at least one parent to be present, as well as your child (though they do not have to be present for the whole appointment if they prefer not to be). At the end of the appointment, the Psychologist will let you know whether they feel it would be advisable to proceed to the next stage of the assessment or not.

Face-to-face ADOS-II

If we decide to proceed, a face-to-face assessment using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – 2nd Edition (ADOS-II) will be arranged at our clinic in Hertford.

The ADOS-II is an activity-based assessment, which involves the child and the assessor completing different activities together. This appointment will be with a different member of our team.

The ADOS-II typically takes up to one hour. Parents are normally asked to wait outside of the room whilst this assessment is being completed.

Discussion and report

Once the assessment is complete, our clinicians meet as a multidisciplinary team to discuss all parts of the assessment. Moreover, the diagnostic outcome is then agreed (i.e. ASD or not ASD).

Autism Assessment – Follow up

We write a full report which includes a clear description of your child’s presentation. In addition, recommendations are tailored to their individual needs.

The whole process from the first appointment to receiving the report should take no more than 6-8 weeks.

Lastly, you will have the option to book a follow-up appointment with our clinical team to discuss the report/outcome if you would like. These appointments typically take up to one hour.
