Young Adult Autism and ADHD assessments. We have now launched our Autism and ADHD assessment pathway for young adults. Our comprehensive assessments follow the NICE guidelines and are conducted by clinicians with expertise in this area. We can take self-funding patients as well as insurance funded patients.

Young Adult Autism and ADHD assessments – Initial contact and screening

We accept self-referrals for ASD and/or ADHD assessments for young adults. There is no need for a GP referral. You can get in touch with us by enquiry form, phone or email to request an assessment. We will then send you out some initial information and if you decide to proceed, we will begin the screening process. We understand that everyone is different and some young adults will prefer to contact us directly about the assessment whereas others may prefer for someone else to do this on their behalf. Either option is fine.

We will ask you to provide contact details for at least one ‘informant’ who you feels knows you well. This informant is usually a parent or carer, because it is very helpful if this person knows a lot about what you were like as a child. Often it is also helpful to involve a second informant, who knows you really well now (e.g. a colleague, friend or partner). We will send some questionnaires to your informants (with your consent) as well as to you, to find out more about you and decide whether an ASD and or ADHD assessment could be helpful for you.

If you have any questions or concerns about informants, please contact our team who will be able to help you with this.

Initial assessment

If we decide that an ASD and/or ADHD assessment is warranted for you, we will arrange a remote developmental interview appointment for you. This normally takes around 2-3 hours. It is helpful if this can be attended by yourself and by the informant that has known you since childhood. We can do this appointment together or separately, depending on your preferences.

Face to Face assessment

We will then invite you to attend a face to face appointment in our clinic in Hertford with a second clinician. If you are being assessed for ADHD then you will probably be asked to complete a Qb Check. In other words, a computer based activity designed to measure levels of ADHD traits. If you are being assessed for ASD then we will use the gold standard autism assessment for this. Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – ADOS II. We recommend that you attend a face to face clinic. However, there is an option to do ADHD only assessments fully remotely.

Young Adult Autism and ADHD assessments – Discussion and report

The clinicians involved in your assessment (and other clinicians if this is felt to be helpful) will then meet together to discuss the assessment findings. This includes a diagnostic outcome. We will let you know when we have reached a decision and we can tell you this straight away if you would like.

We will then write and send a full comprehensive report, outlining any diagnoses and providing person centred recommendations. This report will be sent only to you and it is your choice who you share this with.

Follow up

You will then be able to book in a remote feedback appointment to discuss the outcome of the assessment.

Please note that we do not currently offer a medication follow up clinic. We may be able to signpost you to local private medication follow up clinics should this be required. Please note, if ADHD is diagnosed, it is important to note that a referral can be made to the relevant local NHS service to request a medication follow-up. However, a private diagnosis will not lead to prioritisation for medication follow-up in the NHS.
