Age for Autism Assessment

At what age can you assess and diagnose autism?

We are often asked at what age can you assess and diagnose autism. Here at Private Child Autism Assessment in Hertfordshire, we specialise in assessing school-aged children and adolescents for autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

We usually start by having a discussion with a parent (over the phone or by email). Secondly, we send out some questionnaires to home and (usually) school. Once we have received these back, we schedule the first appointment.

Age for Autism Assessment – Younger Children

In some circumstances, we may be able to offer autism assessments for 3 and 4-year-olds. For children this young, it is important that they have first been seen by a Paediatrician. This is important in the case of young children as it is important to assess the child’s overall health, growth patterns and milestones.

Importantly, a Paediatrician will conduct a thorough physical examination. This is to rule out underlying medical conditions that may be associated with autism. In rare cases, certain genetic disorders or medical conditions can present with symptoms similar to autism. It is essential to differentiate between them to ensure accurate diagnose and appropriate intervention.

Paediatrician Advice

The Paediatrician may also advise certain forms of genetic testing, which you should have the opportunity to consider. Additionally, a local Paediatrician may also be able to link you in with other helpful services that you can access for support in your local area.

If you have a 3 or 4-year-old who has been assessed by an NHS or private Paediatrician then we may be able to assess your child for autism. Moreover, we may also require that your child has been assessed by a Speech and Language Therapist. And have had a hearing screen.
